Young Thug Trial: Key Witness Causes Controversy by Hinting at Refusal to Testify

Judge Paige Reese Whitaker warned Kenneth “Woody” Copeland that he could face contempt charges if he refused to testify again in Young Thug’s RICO trial. Copeland expressed uncertainty about testifying when the trial resumes next week.

Copeland was a key witness who had a secret meeting with the case’s former judge and prosecutors, leading to a disruption in Young Thug’s trial. Defense attorneys suspected that Judge Ural Glanville and the prosecution pressured Copeland to testify in June.

The secret meeting caused legal turmoil, resulting in Judge Glanville’s recusal from the case. Judge Rachel Krause ordered Judge Glanville’s removal in July.

Judge Shukura Ingram was initially assigned to take over the case from Judge Glanville but recused herself due to a potential conflict of interest. Judge Whitaker was then tasked with handling the complex case.

The defense sought a mistrial, but Judge Whitaker showed determination in moving forward with Young Thug’s trial. Testimony was scheduled to resume on August 12 after a hiatus since the first week of July.

Young Thug has been in custody since his 2022 arrest, and Judge Whitaker denied his motion for bond in July. Young Thug’s lawyer filed a motion to disqualify the lead prosecutors in the RICO case, which is pending a ruling from Judge Whitaker.
