Raygun, known professionally as Rachael “Raygun” Gunn, made waves during the inaugural breaking competition at the Summer Olympics in Paris 2024. Her unorthodox dance moves and subsequent viral memes drew attention, but Gunn has announced her retirement from competitive breaking following negative feedback.
Appearing on The Jimmy & Nath Show, Gunn addressed the criticism she faced during the Olympics, attributing her departure from the sport to the backlash she received. Despite her passion for dancing and initial intentions to continue competing, Gunn expressed that the challenges of facing future battles in breaking have led her to bow out gracefully.
Aside from her breaking career, Gunn is an esteemed educator at Macquarie University Faculty of Arts, specializing in Media, Communications, Creative Arts, Language, and Literature. Her academic achievements include a groundbreaking PhD thesis titled “Deterritorializing gender in Sydney’s breakdancing scene: a B-girl’s experience of B-boying,” shedding light on her personal journey in the breaking community in Australia.
Despite not scoring in the Summer Olympics breaking event, Raygun denies allegations of being a ratings ploy or a controversy-stirrer. Her decision to retire marks the end of an era in her competitive breaking career, leaving behind a legacy that extends beyond the dance floor.
