NBA legend Michael Jordan is doing what he can to ensure member of the underprivileged common Charlotte receive the care they deserve.
On Thursday, the Charlotte Hornets owner unveiled the first of two medical clinics funded by him and his family. The Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic, located in West Charlotte, will provide access to primary and preventive care to Charlotteans, as well as access to social workers, mental health experts, and oral health practitioners. The clinic will be available for those who are uninsured or underinsured. During the grand opening of the $7 million clinic, an emotional Jordan said “This is a very emotional thing for me to be able to give back to a community that has supported me over the years.”
“The money is not the issue to me. It’s the commitment to be able to make a difference and make an impact to a community that in the future will make an impact to the city of Charlotte,” the six-time NBA champion said.
This is just the beginning for Jordan – as he vowed to do more, saying “this is just the start of a battle of being able to touch as many people as we can.”
As Fox46 reports, the clinic was missing from the community since so many low-income families go without basic medical necessities. Novant Health leaders explained they pulled zip codes, looking for areas that lacked medical services for low income families.
“When you look at the growth in this area, in the next 3-5 years, we need triple the primary care that is needed today,” Novant Health Executive Vice President and Chief Consumer Officer Jesse Cureton said.
