The 2018 Creative Arts Emmys was one for the books! The night was filled with historic wins for black actors and also dealt out many firsts for black Hollywood’s finest.
For the first time, Black actors swept all guest acting categories during the historic award show. Tiffany Haddish, Katt Williams, Samira Wiley and Ron Cephas Jones took home their statues for their guest star roles. Tiffany Haddish and Katt Williams each snagged an award for best actress and actor in a comedy series. Haddish for hosting “Saturday Night Live” and Williams earned an award for his role as the crazy, alligator owning uncle in “Atlanta.” As for Drama, Ron Cephas Jones won for his beloved character on ABC’s “This Is Us” and Wiley for her role in the acclaimed series “Handmaid’s Tale.”

Another historic moment of the evening went to John Legend after he earned an Emmy for “Jesus Christ Superstar.” At 39, Legend is one of the youngest EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) winner and is also the first African-American man to earn that honor. The first black entertainer to receive an EGOT was Whoopi Goldberg, who earned it in 2002.
“Before tonight, only 12 people had won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony in competitive categories. Sirs Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice and I joined that group when we won an Emmy for our production of their legendary show Jesus Christ Superstar.” The crooner wrote on Instagram. “So happy to be part of this team. So honored they trusted me to play Jesus Christ. So amazed to be in such rarefied air.”
The Creative Arts Emmys, which are held a week before the 70th annual Emmy Awards, honors “artistic and technical achievement” in various television program genres including, guest performances in a weekly series, animation series, documentary and reality programming.
