Although Childish Gambino’s next album may be his last…his alter ego Donald Glover will be returning to FX with another season of Atlanta.
According to Variety, the cable network has renewed the award-winning comedy series for a third season. Created by Glover, the series became an instant hit and received critical acclaim for the first two seasons. Along with holding a 99% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the series was nominated for six Emmys for its first season and winning two for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor – going to Donald Glover. For fans –news of the renewal of a third comes as a pleasant surprise, as the second season, titled “Atlanta: Robbin’ Season,” recently ended.
“Atlanta’ is phenomenal, achieving and exceeding what few television series have done,” FX Networks and FX Productions co-president Nick Grad said per Variety. “With ‘Atlanta: Robbin’ Season,’ Donald and his collaborators elevated the series to even greater heights, building on the enormous success of their award-winning first season. We’re grateful to the producers and our extraordinary cast and crew for achieving this level of excellence, and we share the excitement with our audience about the third season knowing they will continue to take us to unexpected and thrilling places.”
Glover –who also serves as executive producer, writer, and director –stars in the series alongside Lakeith Stanfield, Brian Tyree Henry and Zazie Beetz. Along with Donald, the series is executive produced by his brother, Stephen, along with Hiro Murai, Paul Simms and Dianne McGunigle.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Stephen Glover spoke about the forthcoming season and stated that the show’s writers already have ideas. “I think we have some cool ideas in season three that’ll put some more women on screen,” Glover said. “There’s a very specific perspective from the Atlanta woman that I think we’re gonna explore in season three.”
Now the only question we are left with is when will the third season premiere?
