‘Boomerang’ Reboot Will Be Coming to BET

Are you a fan of the 90’s classic Boomerang? Well get ready, because the Eddie Murphy film is getting a reboot and its coming to BET!

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the 1992 comedy was given a straight-to-series order from the network. Produced by Paramount Television, the classic film will be turned into a 10 episode, half-hour comedy series. It is reported that the series will center on a successful executive, similar to Murphy’s character, who “finds that his lifestyle choices have turned back on him when his new boss turns out to be a bigger deviant that he is,” The series will explore “contemporary workplace dynamics,” like office policies, relationships, changing role of gender, and conflicts between Generation X and Millennials.

“The shows that have been most successful on BET are all scripted: The Game, The New Edition Story, Being Mary Jane, Real Husbands of Hollywood. When you succeed in that space, it has a wonderful effect on the brand,” said network president Scott Mills.

The series just one of the several shows that will be added to the BET roster. Along with the Boomerang reboot, BET has picked up another comedy, “Peachtree Place,” from Girls Trip producer Will Packer, that follows five thirty-somethings living in Atlanta, as well as a drama “American Soul,” which is inspired by the life of Soul Train creator Don Cornelius.

The project has yet to attach an executive producer and writer, and it has not been confirmed if the original cast, like Murphy, Grace Jones, Halle Berry and Martin Lawrence, will star in the reboot.

“Our new focus is on shows that are dramatic, character-driven, aspirational and authentically anchored in the African-American experience,” Mills said. “We are confident that content in that vein is going to allow us to more consistently pull big audiences you’ve seen us pull with The New Edition Story, the BET Awards, Being Mary Jane and The Game.”
