Check Out the Trailer for Netflix’s Roxanne Shanté Biopic “Roxanne Roxanne”

Netflix is bringing viewers back to the 80’s with the biopic about the most feared battle rappers in hip-hop, Roxanne Shanté.

Appropriately titled, Roxanne Roxanne, the forthcoming film stars breakout actress Chante Adams as Roxanne, alongside Nia Long, Beastie Boys emcee Adam Horovitz and award winning actor Mahershala Ali. Directed by Michael Larnell, the biopic tells the story of the “Bite This” rappers early life and rise to hip-hop royalty. Becoming an instant hit at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, the film earned Chante Adams the Special Jury Prize for Breakthrough Performance.

The film is produced by the same people who produced Dope and Fruitvale Station, including Pharrell’s I Am Other and Forest Whittaker’s Significant Productions – with RZA responsible for the score. Shanté, who is also serving as producer, expressed her excitement for the film back in 2016. ‘When your sister Nia Long is playing your Mama Miss Peggy in the 80’s, you can only feel so honored and so so blessed.” She wrote.

Born Lolita Shanté Gooden, the Queens emcee began rapping at the age of 13 and quickly rose to fame in the early 1980’s after releasing her hit single “Roxanne’s Revenge” in response to U.T.F.O.’s “Roxanne Roxanne.” Recognized as one of the first popular female rappers, Shanté was also a member of the Juice Crew in the 80’s and 90’s. The group was founded by producer Marley Marl and radio DJ Mr. Magic and introduced notable artist like Biz Markie, Kool G Rap and Big Daddy Kane.
