Check Out These Kids Who Recreated the ‘Black Panther’ Posters!
As the countdown to the Black Panther premiere comes to and end, a group of children recreated the character posters for the long-awaited Marvel film, proving representation matters!
London-based Nigerian photographer Àsìkò was commissioned by Looks Like Me, a talent and casting agency in the United Kingdom aiming to redefine beauty, to recreate the character promotional posters with children.“As a kid who read comics Black Panther was one of the very few black superheroes I came across. For a child it is a beautiful thing to see yourself represented in a positive light in pop culture.” The visual artist wrote on Instagram. “What is also great is that it’s a hero steeped in culture and heritage and not drug deals or street thuggin.”
In the compelling photo series, you will see several children – from ages 6 to 10 – dressed as the cast for the forthcoming film. In one photo, you’ll see a young girl named N’Adjoa who is inspired by Lupita Nyong’o’s character Nakia, as well as young boy named Asa, who was dressed Daniel Kaluuya’s character W’Kabi and of course, little Kenyah who was the Black Panther!
“[Ryan Coogler] and [Marvel Studios] have made a film that is part of the positive narrative changing voice of Africa and the black race and boy does it matter. I can imagine a child being empowered watching [Black Panther] thinking “That superhero looks just like me,” Àsìkò continued.
