Issa Rae is slowly but surely taking over HBO…and I’m excited AF! It has been reported that HBO has picked up two shows from the Insecure star and co-creator.
According to Deadline, HBO has picked up a comedy and drama from the acclaimed actress as a part of Rae’s production deal with the premium-cable network. With Emmy-winning writer and producer Travon Free, Rae will serve as executive producer for Him or Her. The single camera 30-minute comedy chronicles the love life of a bisexual black man and the relationships he finds himself in.
Sweet Life, a coming of age drama, is set in the Black Beverly Hills of Windsor Hills. The series will focus on the wealthy black teens growing up in the Los Angeles neighborhood. As Deadline reports, Rae will team up with Scandal producer Raamla Mohamed to pen the script for the one-hour drama. Mohamed and Rae will both serve as executive producers for the drama, along with 3 Arts.
Earlier this month, The New Yorker shared a video of Rae pitching a show about a series following the lives of the well-heeled teens. “Think 90210 or Gossip Girl for black kids,” Rae says in the video. “Maybe we could call it Ladera Heights 90041, Windsor Hills 90043. It could be Potomac Maryland 20854. That’s the real s***.”
As for now, there are no premiere dates set for the shows but we’re definitely excited to see what Issa Rae has in store!
