Missy Elliot’s path as a rapper, producer, and songwriter has shaped music and influenced pop culture for more than two decades – now “Work It” rapper will be receiving Essences 2018 Black Women in Music honor. The acclaimed artist will receive the honor, which began back in 2010, to recognize her accomplishments as an artist and influencer.
Essence describes Elliot as “A consummate visionary whose creativity knows no limits,” and as someone who has “continuously pushed the boundaries in her work to shift the culture for the better across multiple industries including music, dance, fashion, film, television, and art.” Essence also noted her celebration of black culture and how it “broke barriers for women in Hip Hop and music as a whole.”
“The artistry of Missy Elliott cuts across generations—underscored by her vast creative accomplishments and contributions to the culture,” Essence Editor-in-Chief, Vanessa De Luca said in a statement. “So prolific is her work, she is an inspiration to women all over the world. Missy’s energetic presence is truly magnetic and we can’t wait to celebrate her as one of the artistic masterminds of our time.”
Missy took to Instagram to share her excitement about receiving the amazing honor. “I am humbly grateful that Essence will honor me at #BlackWomenInMusic. I couldn’t be more thankful and excited to receive this recognition, Thank You to all of you who have supported me through the years I love yall.”
Taking place during Grammy week, Essence’s “Black Women in Music” recognizes the accomplishments of both emerging and well-known artists and influencers. According to Essence, past honorees include Grammy-winning artists Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Mary J. Blige, Kelly Rowland and Grammy nominee Andra Day, as well as industry veteran Sylvia Rhone and singer/songwriter Emeli Sandé. Missy Elliot has won several awards including four Grammy’s for her hits “Lose Control,” “Work It,” “Get Ur Freak On,” and “Scream a.k.a Itchin.”
Missy will receive this honor on January 28th at New York City’s Highline Ballroom.
