The Weeknd and Selena Gomez Reportedly Call It Quits
Amid some really amazing news for Starboy artist The Weeknd, he was also at the receiving end of some troubling news – for his personal life at least. Yesterday (Oct. 31), news broke that the Toronto native and former Disney Channel darling Selena Gomez had called it quits. They had been in a relationship for almost a year.
The Weeknd (born Abel Tesfaye), 27, and Gomez, 25, started dating back in January, when the two were first spotted publicly, having dinner and sharing intimate public displays of affection. The two didn’t confirm the relationship in a statement but did so publicly after posting images of one another on their Instagram accounts that seemed to answer the question, are they or aren’t they. They made their public debut at the Met Gala this past May.
However, over the weekend, Gomez made headlines following a reunion with her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber. Although the lunch was said to be strictly platonic, spending the entire weekend with your ex definitely set off the alarms for a lot of gossip sites about the status of her and The Weeknd’s relationship. Gomez went on to attend church with her on-again off-again ex and was even spotted spending time with Bieber at his home.
Meanwhile, PR teams tried to squash rumors of Beiber and Gomez rekindling anything by saying that The Weeknd was completely aware of the reunion and okay with it. However, his actions in real time suggested differently. The R&B crooner unfollowed an Abelena fan account on Instagram, as well as Gomez’s mother, and several members of her team.
By the end of Monday (Oct. 30), news was all but confirmed that The Weeknd and Gomez had called it quits, ending their 10-month romance.
There was some speculation that the relationship was a publicity stunt put together by the pair’s team. Gomez is recovering from a kidney transplant surgery she had over the summer after learning of kidney failure, which was the result of her ongoing battle with lupus. It’s been speculated that the “relationship” happened to keep the public’s eye off of Gomez’s health and onto her relationship so that she could undergo treatment and have her surgery peacefully. The fact that her Today interview dropped where she is opening up about it and that her and Bieber have been spotted canoodling, which further fans the flames.
Don’t feel sorry for the “Earned It” singer. Rumor has it, that he has his eye on an ex of his own. We’re sure supermodel Bella Hadid will be getting a “Hey stranger” text any minute now.
