It’s not every day that a relatively unknown artist can say that their debut album has gone platinum within the first year of its release. Khalid is one such artist. The 19-year-old singer/songwriter captivated music listeners and acquired fans at a rapid rate when the lead single off the album was released. “Location” was everywhere and acted as the preface to a beautiful body of work capturing the beautiful sometimes doubt-filled life of an American teenager – aptly titled American Teen.
The El Paso native is now a huge Grammy contender, rubbing elbows with some of the biggest names in the music industry, has a multi-platinum plaque for his lead single “Location” that will certainly keep his platinum plaque for the LP American Teen company.
The RIAA certified the album for the artist on Tuesday (Oct. 24), which was four months after the studio album had reached its gold status.
Released on March 3, American Teen has sold a million units and has done so with no features. Khalid took to Instagram to celebrate the great news with fans.
“Earlier this year, I told myself that March 3rd was going to be the day that changed my life forever. 7 months later, American Teen is Platinum,” Khalid wrote in his caption. “Thank you guys so much for EVREYTHING! I love you guys! A debut album with NO features. LETS GOOOO”
The album’s second single “Young, Dumb & Broke” was certified platinum the same day his album went platinum. The visual for the carefree anthem featured Khalid surrounded by cool kids that included cameos from people like Saved by the Bell‘s Mr. Belding, model/actresss Zolee Griggs, model Salem Mitchell, singer Normani Kordei, and Wayne Brady as a custodian. It also playfully included fun superlatives like “Teachers Pet,” “Most Likely to Succeed,” “Prom King and Queen,” etc.
