Beyoncé Releases New Video for “Freedom” for International Day of the Girl

Beyoncé kicks off International Day of the Girl with a powerful new video for her 2016 hit song “Freedom.”

In partnership with Salma Hayek’s Chime for Change and The Global Goals, the video features a group of fierce young girls from around the world singing and dancing along to the track, while shocking statistics are displayed relating to education, violence, and health. The stats transposed onto the video included, “Every five minutes a girl dies as a result of violence, 71% of human trafficking victims are female, 63 million girls have undergone female genital mutilation, and 130 million girls are out of school.”

With over 3 million views, the visual ends by challenging viewers to help in tackling the “Global Goals” by 2030 – examples include ending all forms of violence against girls, ending the AIDS epidemic, and put all girls in school.

The Global Goals website details the organizations that have signed on to complete these goals – some include Donor Direct Action, Girls Not Brides, Freedom United, and Stars Foundation.

“Today is #DayoftheGirl. Girls around the world are fighting for their freedom every day,” the caption read. “Join me, Chime for Change, and The Global Goals by taking action for #FreedomForGirls now.”

This comes after the LEMONADE singer dropped a remix of J. Balvin and Willy Williams single “Mi Gente” and announced that sales will go to relief efforts in Puerto Rico, Mexico, and other Caribbean countries that have been devastated by Hurricane Maria. “We’re heartbroken by the hurricanes and earthquakes that have devastated families around the world,” a statement on her website reads. “There are many ways to help. We’ve listed a few organizations that are on the ground from Mexico to the Caribbean, lending a hand to those who need it most.”

Some of the organizations include TIDAL X BROOKLYN, Tim Duncan Relief Fund, You Caring (Ricky Martin Foundation for Puerto Rico), and Bread of Life.
