Award-winning actress Viola Davis and Insecure co-creator Larry Wilmore have officially signed on to serve as executive producers for a new, multi-camera comedy Black Don’t Crack.
The comedy, recently picked up by ABC, is named after a popular phrase articulating the idea that African Americans’ skin does not wrinkle and ages slower compared to people from other ethnicities, for example actress Angela Bassett, Pharrell, Regina Hall, and supermodel Iman… just to name a few. According to Deadline, the series is centered on three former sorority sisters who lost touch after college and come together during a pivotal point in each of their lives. The sisters realize now that they are older sometimes it’s okay to crack and no one will have your back like your sisters. Wilmore executive produces through his Wilmore Films banner, while Davis and her producing partner/husband Julius Tennon will executive produce via their JuVee Productions. Joining Wilmore and Davis is Insecure co-executive producer Regina Hicks, who will serve as executive producer and writer.
“Viola and I are inspired by Regina Hicks and to have Larry Wilmore EP is a dream,” Tennon said per Deadline. “Seeing these three African American women who appear not to age but, to have challenges that we can all relate to and in a way, we have not seen before, will be a revelation.”
Wilmore serves as executive producer alongside Hicks on HBO’s hit summer comedy Insecure. The series, that seemed to spit the audience in half (#TeamIssa or #TeamLawrence) tells the story of the modern-day black woman and her awkward yet hilarious experiences. Recently, the show’s creator –Issa Rae – announced the show has been renewed for a third season.
“I’m thrilled to be a part of this exciting project and to collaborate with the crazy talented, Regina Hicks,” Wilmore said. “BDC is hilarious, heartwarming, and shines a light on women who are hiding in plain sight.”
ABC has not announced any details regarding casting, filming, or a premiere date for Black Don’t Crack.
