It looks like NBA star Dwyane Wade is hanging up his Chicago Bulls jersey and picking up a Cavs jersey. It is being reported that the All-Star guard is close to inking a $2.3 million deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
A league source states that Wade, who agreed to a contract buyout with the Bulls on Sunday (September 24), will be an unrestricted free agent and will sign a one-year deal worth the veteran’s minimum, $2.3 million, once his wavier clears – as ESPN reports. In addition to reuniting with his ex-teammate LeBron James, Wade will join a roster that includes Tristan Thompson, JR Smith, and Kevin Love. The team will also see the absence of star point guard Isaiah Thomas, who suffered from a hip injury, until January 2018. The source also states the team will primarily cut a non-guaranteed training camp invitee to make room for Wade on the 20-man training camp roster.
The Cavaliers’ coach, Tyronn Lue, spoke on the challenges with adding new players to the team’s roster this off-season, but he says that he and the players are up for the challenge. “Anytime you get new pieces and new players, it’s always challenging, but I’m up for the challenge, and so are the players,” Lue said per ESPN. “We will figure it out. It will be a good year for us.”
Wade averaged 18 points and 3.8 assist per game during his time on the Chicago Bulls last season. Before then, Wade spent 13 seasons with the Heat where he averaged 23.3 points, 5.7 assists, and 4.8 rebounds a game. According to ESPN, the league source says Wade gave back $8 million of his $23.8 million 2017-18 salary to reach a buyout agreement with the Bulls.
The news of Wade’s trade comes after the NBA conducted several trades with All-Star players. Over the summer, it was announced that Kyrie Irving will be joining the Boston Celtics, while Carmelo Anthony gave an emotional goodbye when it was announced that he would be leaving the New York Knicks for the Oklahoma City Thunder.
