The 2017 Emmys will definitely be one for the books. The show was full of historical moments, emotional acceptance speeches, and let’s not forget host Stephen Colbert’s hilarious opening monologue. However, Insecure star and creator Issa Rae started the night early after she got very candid about who she was rooting for.

As she graced the red carpet, the acclaimed actress was asked about who she was rooting for, Issa gave the best response yet. “I’m rooting for everybody Black. I am!” she said with no hesitation.

Although her critically-acclaimed show, Insecure, did not receive any nominations at the annual award show. According to Variety, Rae expressed her gratitude to the show’s audience, explained that their support allowed her and the writers of the hit show to tell stories from their personal experiences. “People just let us be and tell the stories we wanted to tell and me and the writers ran with it,” she said.

Rae also added that she’s happy with the amount of diversity in this year’s nominations. “You have so many people behind the camera and behind the scenes that are committed to telling authentic, real stories that haven’t been seen on television before and you have audiences embracing it because they’re tired of seeing the same old, same old stories. So it’s just a pleasure to be among such great company,” she said per Variety.

This year has been big for the Awkward Black Girl web series creator. Recently, it was announced that she will star opposite Amandla Stenberg in the new coming-of-age drama The Hate U Give. However, not long after the announcement of Rae’s film debut – the actress/writer took to social media to share that she will be joining forces with CoverGirl as the new face for the cosmetic brand.
