Sugar, spice, everything nice – and now, they’re adding a little chocolate to the recipe. The city of Townsville is getting infused with melanin magic just in time for the Cartoon Network reboot of the popular series The Powerpuff Girls. In what will be a five-part movie event, The Powerpuff Girls: Power of Four, a new character – whose identity has not yet been revealed – will be joining the original trio Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles as their fourth. Though the character is shroud in secrecy so far, what we do know, is that the character will be the series’ first one of color.
South African singer, rapper, producer, and songwriter Toya Delazy will be doing the honors of voicing the first black girl thrown into the Powerpuff girl mix. The 27-year-old is not as random of a selection as she seems. In fact, Delazy was responsible for creating the South African version of the series’ theme song last year. And now, her affiliation with the series is being taken a step further with this new character development.

“I have always dreamed of being the voice of a cartoon character,” she said in a statement. “Never did I think I would be recording a voice-over as the new Powerpuff Girl for Cartoon Network, though! In a nutshell, Cartoon Network was my childhood. The shows were always quirky, expressive, creative and cool! I have always appreciated how creative the channel is, even to this day. Watching Cartoon Network really opened my mind as a child, and for me the channel still represents creativity in all aspects of the word. The shows are bold, unexpected, energetic and exciting—definitely a brand that I can identify with and relate to.”
One thing’s for sure, this news means our inner black girl’s dreams of being a Powerpuff girl have come true.
“Toya Delazy is definitely a perfect fit for The Powerpuff Girls brand,” Turner Broadcasting Senior Vice President Jamie Ondarza stated. “Toya is definitely a perfect fit as the fourth Powerpuff Girl. She is confident, bubbly and quirky; all the values that we are familiar with, love and appreciate. We have a lot of surprises up our sleeves.”
Be sure to check out the debut of the new melanin-enriched Powerpuff girl when the first part of the reboot airs on Sunday, September 17 at 5:30 PM EST, only on Cartoon Network.
