It’s finally here! First footage of Ava DuVernay’s highly anticipated film A Wrinkle in Time gives us a first look at what’s in store.
From the director who brought the award-winning film Selma and the documentary 13th – A Wrinkle in Time is the adaptation of the 1963 children’s novel by Madeleine L’Engle. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story follows Storm Reid as Meg Murry, a girl whose scientist father (Chris Pine) has been missing after a mysterious disappearance.
The trailer reveals the star-studded cast, including Mindy Kaling as Mrs. Who, Reese Witherspoon as Mrs. Whatsit, and Oprah Winfrey as Mrs. Which. Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Zach Galifianakis are also appearing in the film as Dr. Kate Murry and The Happy Medium. Jennifer Lee, writer and co-director of Frozen, has penned the adaptation from the award-winning novel of the same name.
Debuting at D23 on Saturday (July 15), the trailer, set with a cover of “Sweet Dreams,” features elaborate costumes and makeup accompanied with artful sets. Pine begins with explaining time and space travel, however, his finding makes him a target of a kidnapping. It’s up to his daughter (Reid) to save him and the entire universe.
“I saw myself in it, and I saw so many different kinds of people in it,” DuVernay said along with Winfrey, Reid, Pine and Witherspoon, who presented the trailer – per The Hollywood Reporter. “A family story wrapped in an epic adventure where you see worlds you’ve never seen before.”
