Not long after her docu-series Mariah’s World, the legendary music icon is set to return to smalls screens with a scripted drama series based on her rise to fame. It has been confirmed that Starz, the network behind Power and Survivor’s Remorse, is developing a series based on Carey’s real-life experiences and her rise to the top.
Set in 1986 New York City, the drama series will follow the rise of an ambitious bi-racial 16-year-old girl – as Deadline reports. Written by Nina Colman, the series will follow the aspiring singer/songwriter, who overcame a difficult childhood to become the highest-selling female artist of all time. With Colman serving as a showrunner, Carey is expected to serve as executive producer alongside longtime friend Brett Ratner (The Revenant, Prison Break: Resurrection) and Stella Bulochnikov (Boss, T.I & Tiny: The Family Hustle).
The “Touch My Body” singer got her claim to fame back in the early 90’s with hits including “Visions of Love,” “Someday,” “I Don’t Wanna Cry,” and “Emotions” – most of which earned Carey a spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Back in April, Carey announced that she and Epic Records will team up to launch her own label, Butterfly MC Records. It has been reported that the first release from the label will be new album from Carey, the first album since her 2014’s Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse. The award-winning singer is also expected to sing alongside Lionel Richie on the rescheduled All Hits Tour.
As for the small screens, Carey most recently had her own docu-series, Mariah’s World, which premiered last year on E!. Fans of the music icon can also expect to see her Christmas hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You” come to life as an animated series slated to release this holiday season.
