Netflix Releases New Poster for “Death Note” Featuring LaKeith Stanfield

With the premiere date slowly approaching, Netflix has released a new poster for the adaptation of the manga/anime series Death Note featuring LaKeith Stanfield.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the film is based on the Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata manga Death Note. The film follows a high school student, Light Turner, who discovers a notebook that has supernatural abilities. The notebook is capable of killing people whose names are written on its pages. Drunk on power and godlike abilities, Turner begins to use these powers to kill those he deems unworthy of life. The killings then spark a game of cat-and-mouse between Turner and an eccentric, mysterious detective L.

Stanfield, who has taken over small and silver screens in FX’s Atlanta and Get Out, is starring as the odd detective. In black-and white, the poster features Stanfield dressed as the character – staring down the camera. Dressed opposite of the manga version of the character, which consisted of a black hooded jacket, dark shirt, and a black bandana covering his face.

Directed by Adam Wingard, Death Note features a star-studded cast including Nat Wolff (Paper Towns), Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers), Shea Whigham (The Wolf of Wall Street), Michael Shamus Wiles (Sons of Anarchy), and Willem Dafoe doing the voice of Ryuk – a bored Shinigami (Translates to “God of Death”), who drops a Death Note into the human word in order to have fun.

If you thought that was it for the 25-year-old actor… well you guessed wrong. It has been reported that Stanfield has been picked up to join Tessa Thompson, Terry Crews, Steven Yeun and Power’s Omari Hardwick for Boots Riley’s drama Sorry to Bother You. Be sure to check out LaKeith as “L” in the trailer below!

Death Note is set to premiere on Netflix August 25th.
