‘Empire’ and ‘Star’ to Premiere This Fall in a Two-Part Crossover Episode Event

Lee Daniels has seen a lot of success from his two hit Fox music dramas. Empire has been keeping fans on the edge of their seats since its 2015 debut. And Star hasn’t been too far behind – ever since the rookie drama premiered last winter while Empire was on hiatus. Empire and Star were both renewed for a fourth and second season, respectively. And now, it’s been announced that the two dramas will meet in season premiere crossover episodes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox will use the crossover, in which Star’s Carlotta (Queen Latifah) come face-to-face with Empire’s Cookie (Taraji P. Henson), Lucious (Terrence Howard) and Jamal Lyon (Jussie Smollett) for the first time, to launch the new seasons of both series.

The special two-episode event will air this fall and will kick off the shows’ first night of airing back-to-back. The premiere date for both shows is slated for Wednesday, September 27 at 8 pm and will start with Empire. Lucious is preparing to make his first appearance publicly since the Las Vegas explosion in honor of Empire Entertainment’s 20th anniversary. Meanwhile, each member of the Lyon family and Lucious’s nurse (Demi Moore) seemingly have their own reasons of why they want Lucious to be back in good physical and mental health once again.

After that, the second season of Star will premiere at 9 pm. Star will see the Big Trouble girls, and manager Carlotta, continuing to encounter ups and downs on their journey to making it, despite the success they saw at Atlanta NextFest last season.

This will be the first official crossover for the two Fox favorites and is a very smart move on Fox’s behalf as series crossovers are becoming more and more prevalent in recent years. Broadcasters use this as a solution to increase live viewership with special event episodes/programming.

The CW’s Arrowverse is a prime example of series that have seen their ratings rise when they engage in multiple crossover episodes between series. Crossover events sometimes span from Arrow to Supergirl to The Flash to Legends of Tomorrow, with viewers staying tuned for every episode.
