Yes, you heard that right! Miami hip hop group 2 Live Crew will be heading to the big screen. It has been confirmed that Lionsgate is working on a biopic about the group that produced hits like “Get it Girl” and “Me So Horny.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will focus on 2 Live Crew manager and hype-man Luther Campbell – who was involved with a copyright lawsuit over the group’s music. The case, which made it all the way to the supreme court, ruled in the favor of Campbell and 2 Live Crew. As a result, it was ruled that music sampling was used as a form of parody, thus making it free to use. It has been reported that the studio is partnering with Temple Hill to adapt writer Craig Williams’s memoir Book of Luke: My Fight for Truth, Justice and Liberty City. Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfry, who previously worked on Power Rangers and the Twilight franchise, will serve as producers for Temple Hill.
Back in the late 80’s and early 90’s, 2 Live Crew was known for their raunchy lyrics and are responsible for some of rap’s hottest tracks. Consisting of four members: DJ Mr. Mixx, Fresh Kid Ice, Amazing Vee, Brother Marquis – the group found great success with their 1989 album, As Nasty As They Wanna Be, which put them on the map. The 2 Live Crew earned one double platinum album, two platinum albums, two gold albums, three chart-topping singles, and sold over 10 million units – per 2 Live Crew website. The group also had singles featured on film soundtracks including Boyz n The Hood, Friday, and New Jack City.
Although there is no word on the release of the 2 Live Crew biopic, the production from Lionsgate will be yet another biopic under the company’s belt. On Friday (June 16), Lionsgate will release the highly anticipated film, All Eyez on Me, which focuses on the untold story of the late West Coast rapper Tupac Shakur.
