The wait is officially over! Star Trek fans can finally rejoice! The Star Trek: Discovery’s First Look trailer has arrived. The new trailer gave us some insight on what to expect in the series and also left us with some questions. The CBS All Access series, which stars Sonequa Martin-Green as First Officer Michael Burnham, also announced that the initial 13 episode order would be expanded to 15 for the series’ freshman season.
Star Trek: Discovery takes place in the Prime Universe and chronicles a time ten years before Captain Kirk’s five-year mission with the Enterprise. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Discovery is the fact that it’s a story told through the perspective of a character that is not the captain of the ship.
At last year’s TCA, executive producer Bryan Fuller noted the series’ decision to put storytelling in another character’s hands. “We’ve seen six characters from the captain’s point of view,” he said.
Another point of interest is that the main character might also be Vulcan. Enter: Sonequa Martin-Green. “In order to understand something that is so completely alien from her, she must first understand herself. That’s part of our journey on this planet to get along, and that’s part of our journey in this first season,” Fuller added.
The former The Walking Dead actress’s portrayal of First Officer Michael Burnham will more than likely be a bridge between the human world and the alien world. After all, the trailer revealed briefly in a flashback, she is from the planet Vulcan. However, the First Officer’s ears are not pointed, so there is more to the nature of her actual background than meets the eye.
“You will never learn Vulcan,” Spock’s father, Vulcan Ambassador Sarek, tells her in the trailer. “Your tongue is too human.”
It will be interesting to see that evolution in a lead that is not only female, but also black. Star Trek has always been decades ahead of the game in their efforts to promote diversity. Casting Martin-Green and choosing her to be the epicenter of the series is a great step in furthering that direction. Another major plus for the series is the decision to cast Asian actress Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) as Captain Philippa Georgiou of the U.S.S. Discovery.
Doug Jones (Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Hellboy) also stars as Lieutenant Saru. Additional confirmed cast members include Jason Isaacs, Shazad Latif, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, Chris Obi, and more.
Star Trek: Discovery will begin airing on CBS All Access this fall.
