‘Power’ Is the Most Popular Television Show on Premium Cable, Second to ‘Game of Thrones’

Power fans have a little more than a month to wait for what’s bound to be a heart-pumping premiere for season four of the STARZ series. Season four is slated to premiere June 25, but ahead of that, Power and executive producer 50 Cent have some great news to celebrate. The show is the number two show on premium cable television, making the series second to the widely popular Game of Thrones (HBO). That is definitely no small feat.

Power has seen a notable increase in viewers since it first started airing back in 2014. Deadline reports that the network has achieved peak ratings season after season after season, and the highest thus far is the previously aired third season premiere that kicked off to a great start with 2.26 million viewers tuning in.

The crime drama that centers on James “Ghost” St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick) as he navigates through the dangerous waters of the drug game as one of New York’s biggest drug dealers. In the beginning, Ghost encounters a woman from his past (Lela Loren) who inspires him to continue the moves he’s trying to make to get out of the drug business and get on to a legitimate path. But his present and the people who depend on him, like his wife Tasha (Naturi Naughton), and his best friend Tommy (Joseph Sikora) make that a hard alternative for him. Things are thrown even more into chaos when we discover that the friend from his past (and eventual lover) is actually the DA assigned to investigate Ghost. The series does well to keep the viewer interested and intrigued on what will happen next and has done so successfully for three seasons so far.

Per Deadline, “Year-to-year, the Season 3 premiere was up more than 58% from the Season 2 and 389% from Season 1 premieres, respectively, in sets of eyeballs. When multiplatform and delayed viewing is factored in, Power has been averaging an audience of around 8 million. That makes it the second-most-watched series on premium cable after HBO’s Emmy winning Game of Thrones.”

This news adds onto some major news for the show’s creator and other executive producer, Courtney Kemp, who was just announced to have signed an overall deal with STARZ and Lionsgate to create a new series and additional projects that could be sold to other networks.

If you haven’t already, watch the trailer for what is sure to be a thrilling season below. Don’t forget to tune into STARZ on June 25.
