‘Black-ish’ Renewed For a Fourth Season and a Spin-Off Might Have Found a New Home On Freeform

Good news for Black-ish fans out there! The hit ABC series has finally gotten the greenlight from ABC that season four is a go. The announcement comes exclusively from Variety.

The third season left viewers at the edge of their seats with a whirlwind of a finale, as Bow (Tracee Ellis-Ross) received some unfortunate news that she had preeclampsia, a diagnosis that can be potentially life-threatening for pregnant women. She would have to be induced so that she could give birth early. It was a scary time for her, but also for Dre (Anthony Anderson) who was going through a sea of emotions, ranging from fear to powerlessness to hope. Knowing that Bow would have to give birth two months ahead of schedule was scary and had a lot of fans nervous of the outcome.

Thankfully, Bow and Dre welcomed their newborn child, DeVonte, and he is alive and well. As a viewer, perhaps what made the episode even more heartfelt was the fact that the finale’s storyline was based on the real-life birth and delivery of the sixth child of Black-ish creator/writer, Kenya Barris.

Thankfully, the finale ended on a happy note. And with a strong third season conclusion paired with a third season average of 5.2 million viewers, a season fourth renewal was well on its way no doubt. Barris and his poignant series deserve it.

Many true blue Black-ish fans might also be wondering what is up with Zoey (Yara Shahidi). It is common knowledge that her character is heading off to college and even had a backdoor pilot episode this season with “Liberal Arts”. According to Deadline, the show had great responses from ABC and viewers alike, but it has been “deemed too young-skewing for the broadcast network.”

Enter, Freeform (formerly ABC Family). Per Deadline, the untitled Zoey spinoff reportedly might “hit right into the millennial [demographic] target of sibling, Freeform.”

Since the Black-ish spinoff‘s initial reporting, comparisons to the popular back in the day sitcom The Cosby Show and its spinoff A Different World have been drawn. While both of those shows aired on NBC throughout their entire respective runs, the switch in network between the ABC show and the proposed Freeform show might be just what the doctor ordered. For Zoey and Yara Shahidi, although the deal is close to being finalized, the network switch is not there yet officially.

Whatever the case may be, we’re excited to see what Kenya has in store for Black-ish fans in the fall season.
