‘Rob & Big’ Star Christopher “Big Black” Boykin Passes at 45

Christopher “Big Black” Boykin of MTV’s Rob & Big passed Tuesday morning (May 9) at the age of 45. Confirmed by PeopleBoykin who starred alongside professional skateboarder and host of Ridiculousness, Rob Dyrdek, died from a heart attack.

The reality star appeared in the hit show as Dyrdek’s bodyguard and friend. The show aired from 2006-2008. However, the show ended abruptly after tension between the two ensued.

“I had been a pro skateboarder for years, so me transitioning to mainstream fame was relatively smooth, right, where for him, the idea that man he was like working security two years earlier and now he’s on television, it was a much different dynamic,” Dyrdek said in an interview with Graham Bensinger. “But I think we both struggled with [it]. I didn’t want to be known as like Rob from Rob & Big … and I think he didn’t want to be known for like the sidekick. So that created a lot of that tension between me and him.”

The news of Boykin’s death came as a surprise for many, including the team at MTV. In a statement obtained by People, a spokesperson from MTV expressed their condolences to the family and friends of Boykin.

“MTV is deeply saddened to learn the news of Christopher ‘Big Black’ Boykin’s passing,” said the spokesperson. “He was a longtime and beloved member of the MTV family and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this time.”

After learning about the sudden death of his longtime friend, Dyrdek shared a touching message on Instagram along with several pictures of the two.
