Sunday night’s MTV Movie & TV Awards was a big night for black Hollywood. Various stars received recognition for their amazing work in the movies and television shows that took over 2017, including stars like Daniel Kaluuya, Trevor Noah, and Lonnie Chavis.
Hosted by Adam Devine, the award show was full of huge performances, tears, laughter, and, of course, a celebration of diversity. Among the many touching moments, the most memorable was the big win for Taraji P. Henson who accepted the award for Best Fight Against the System. In her acceptance speech, she spoke of young girls who are discouraged to work in the field of math and science – she said, “It became my mission and everyone’s mission who was involved with this film to dispel that myth. So that another young girl will not grow up thinking that her mind wasn’t capable of grasping math and science, if it were not for these women we wouldn’t be in space.”
Along with Taraji, stars from this year’s breakout film, Moonlight, won the award for Best Kiss. Ashton Sanders (Chiron) and Jharrel Jerome (Kevin) accepted the award with a touching speech about stepping outside the box to get people to “wake up.”
More of the big winners of the night include, Trevor Noah for The Daily Show, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Lil Rel Howery for his comedic performance in Get Out, Black-ish for Best American Story and 13th for Best Documentary.
