Maybe it’s just me… or we’re getting old! Rappers we loved now have kids in college!
The biggest congrats goes out to Jaewon Phillips who crossed the burning sands of Alpha Phi Alpha! Yesterday (May 2), the son of one of music’s most notable rapper Jadakiss joined the 110-year-old fraternity at the historically black college, Clark Atlanta University. The rapper shared the exciting news in an Instagram post congratulating his son on the big achievement.
Founded in 1906 at Cornell University, Alpha Phi Alpha is the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African-American men. The fraternity originally served as a study and support group for minority students who met racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell, per the website. The founders and early leaders of Alpha Phi Alpha thrived in laying the foundation for the fraternity’s principles of fellowship, scholarship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity. Some of the fraternity’s notable members consist of civil rights leaders including, Martin Luther King Jr., W.E.B DuBois, Thurgood Marshall, and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. A Phi A has also churned out many entertainment heavyweights like ESPN sportscaster/anchor Stuart Scott, singer Lionel Richie, music video director Benny Boom, and actor/author Hill Harper just to name a few.
As for the proud papa, Jadakiss got his start back in early 90’s in the legendary rap group The LOX (originally known as The Warlocks) along with Styles P and Sheek Louch. Since then, Jada has become one of hip hop’s most respected artist. Throughout his career, Jadakiss has worked with the likes of Raekwon, Pharrell, Papoose, Wiz Khalifa, Kanye West, Ghostface Killah, Fabulous, and many more! Not too long ago, Jadakiss toured with the LOX beside Louch, Styles P, and Uncle Murda.
Congrats again to Jaewon on this new journey!
