On the heels of receiving her award for the 2017 Humanitarian of the Year from Harvard University, bad gal RiRi is about to be honored yet again. This time, it won’t be for her charitable endeavors, but instead, she will be honored for her fashion icon status. The Barbados native has been idolized for her style for years and has received honors in the past for her daringness, her willingness to rebel against fashion don’ts, and the ease she has in creating trends. Rihanna has put a face to the phrase, “Wear the clothes, don’t let the clothes wear you.”
Parsons School of Design will be honoring the diva at their 69th Annual Parsons Benefit May 2017.
“Parsons is proud to present Rihanna with this honor, as she has inspired millions through her powerful music and distinct style. She has championed our recent alumni on a number of occasions by wearing their designs. She is also creating important philanthropic programs, which support communities by fostering effective education, health and emergency response programs around the world through her Clara Lionel Foundation,” executive dean of Parsons, Joel Towers, had to say in a statement.
The honor is befitting to Rihanna, as it seeks to recognize global influences that empower and advocate for others through acts of self-expression. It is also befitting because the global phenom has rocked a number of designs created by Parsons alumni (Parsons MFA Fashion and Design society graduates) of the past, including designers Matthew Dolan, Melitta Bauemeister, and Snow Gao.
Founded in 1896, Parsons School of Design has been a leader in creative approaches to innovative design since its inception. Today, Parsons stands as the only art and design school of its kind in America that offers education in a comprehensive university setting. The school offers an extensive curriculum underneath the art and design spectrum and is seen as a noteworthy school if you want to make it in the art world. Parsons has propelled the careers of fashion industry greats like Tom Ford, Donna Karan, Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs, Isaac Mizrahi, and Derek Lam. It’s the school that the who’s who of the fashion world would tell you to invest your time in if you wish to have a career that lasts.

Rihanna doesn’t just live fashion, she breathes it. It’s more than what she wears, it’s who she is.
“I consistently find creative and exciting designs coming from Parsons alumni, so I feel a deep connection to the school. But, I am especially grateful that Parsons would recognize me for the work I’ve done in regards to philanthropy,” the multihyphenate musician said of the honor.
Rihanna is an honoree of the night, alongside Eileen Fisher and the Neiman Marcus Group (accepted by Karen Katz). In the past, the honor has been bestowed actress Sarah Jessica Parker, Huffington Post founder and EIC Arianna Huffington, and Parsons graduate Donna Karan.
The 69th Annual Parsons Benefit will take place at Pier Sixty in NYC.
