Nobody puts Nick Cannon in a corner! The comedian and host has reportedly quit has America’s Got Talent job after coming under fire for a racial joke he made during the filming of his upcoming Showtime comedy special.
Cannon was filming a comedy special for the cable network titled “Stand Up, Don’t Shoot,” when he made some jokes that his AGT network, NBC, reportedly took huge issue with. Here’s what Nick said that landed him in hot water with NBC (via The Wrap):
“I grew up like a real n—,” Cannon said during the special. “But I honestly believe, once I started doing ‘America’s Got Talent,’ they took my real n— card. They did! Because then like these type of people started showing up to my shows.”
Cannon then pointed to three white audience members sitting in the front row. “I can’t do the real n— stuff no more, because then they’ll put me on TMZ.”
He continued:
“I apologize, white people,” he said in the special. “We over here talking about bitches and players and stuff, and you think this is ‘America’s Got Talent.’ It’s going to be a little different tonight. ‘America’s Got Talent,’ but America’s got n—rs, too, so. You staring at a real one onstage […]Matter of fact, that’s what NBC gonna stand for tonight. N— Better Come on, ‘cuz n—s be cussing! So n— be careful!”
As a result of the reported backlash from NBC, Cannon handed in his letter of resignation and let his fans know exactly how he felt over social media. “There is no amount of money worth my dignity or my integrity,” he writes. “I have loved hosting AMERICAS GOT TALENT for the last 8 seasons, watching talented, brave, and courageous Americans accomplish their dreams in front of millions has been nothing but a joy, and everyone has been a pleasure to work with but my soul won’t allow me to be in business with corporations that attempt to frown on freedom of speech, censor artists, and question cultural choices.”
