Black Hollywood cleaned up at this year’s SAG Awards, taking most of the trophies for the theatrical motion pictures section. Hidden Figures, Mahershala Ali, Viola Davis and more claimed prizes by the end of the evening in a huge turnaround for a show that was previously criticized for its lack of diversity in the prize givings. The night was also a win for celebrities using their power and attention to speak out against many of the recent decisions of the newly elected President Trump, including his Muslim ban that sparked more protests across the nation.
Hidden Figures took home the honor of Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, and Taraji P. Henson took the opportunity to make a statement about the film’s relevance in today’s troubling political times. “This story is about unity,” Henson said. “This story is about what happens when we put our differences aside and we come together as a human race. We win. Love wins. Every time.”
Mahershala Ali, who won the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his work in Moonlight, told the audience that he’s Muslim in his speech, and encouraged everyone watching to see uniqueness in difference, as opposed to fear or hate. “I think what I have learned from working on Moonlight, is you see what happens in persecution. What I was so grateful about in having the opportunity to play Juan, a gentleman who saw a young man folding into himself as a result of the persecution of his community, and taking that opportunity to uplift him and tell him he mattered, that he was okay. And accept him. I hope that we do a better job of that. When we kind of get caught up in the minutiae, details that make us different, there’s two ways of seeing that. There’s an opportunity to see the texture of that person, the characteristics that make them unique and then there’s the opportunity to go to war about it. To say “that person is different from me and I don’t like you, so let’s battle.”
The winners were thrilled and more than excited to share their feelings about the night with fans over social media:
