President Obama has been more than a class act during his final days as POTUS and his latest display of grace extended to his Vice President in a sweet and surprising ceremony.
VP Biden had no idea what was in store for him when he attended a ceremony arranged by President Obama, until the president started speaking. “For your faith in your fellow Americans, for your love of country and for your lifetime of service that will endure through the generations, I’d like to ask the military aide to join us on stage,” Obama said during the ceremony. “For my final time as President, I am pleased to award our nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.”
Biden immediately got emotional once he realized what was going on, turning his back to wipe away tears as the medal was brought out.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded for “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors” according to a U.S. Executive Order.
“This honor is not only well beyond what I deserve, but it’s a reflection of the generosity of your spirit,” Biden told Obama. “I don’t deserve this. But I know it came from the president’s heart.”
