A Virginia waitress was unpleasantly surprised when after finishing serving a white couple in her section, she found not a tip, but a racist note.
Kelly Carter is a server at Anita’s New Mexico Style Café in Ashburn, VA and was shocked to find the note, which reads “Great service don’t tip black people” written on a receipt after serving a 20-something white couple. Carter told ABC 7 that she initially couldn’t believe what she read. She said that throughout her time helping the couple, their beliefs were never hinted at- the woman even going so far as to compliment the meal. “The lady was saying they loved the potpie meal,” Carter told the news.

Anita’s owner Tommy Tellez, Sr. is “appalled” by the note and says that Kelly has been nothing but a great employee, who treats all of her guests well. “I’m appalled. This is so disheartening,” he said. “[Kelly] has a following,” he said. “Her philosophy for customer service is way beyond the norm. And we’re really happy to have her.”
Carter says that the rude customers haven’t deterred her from wanting to continue working at Anita’s and providing the customer service she’s become so well-known for- and she’d even serve the couple again if they were to return. “[The customer] didn’t hurt me. He only hurt himself. He only makes me stronger,” she said. “Just me serving them will let them know they did not get the best of me. And I truly mean that.”
