Michelle Obama Tells Oprah ‘No’ She’d Never Run for Office
During their final sit-down in the White House, Oprah asked Michelle Obama the question that many have been wondering about as the end of POTUS’ term draws nearer: Will she be running for office next?
Oprah cuts right to the chase, asking FLOTUS whether or not she’d ever run for office, any kind of office, to which the First Lady promptly and straightforwardly responds “No.”
“That’s one thing I don’t do. I make stuff up, I’m not coy. I’ve proven that. I’m pretty direct,” she told Oprah. “If I were interested in it, I’d say it. I don’t believe in playing games. It’s not something I would do, but it also speaks to the fact that people don’t really understand how hard this is. It’s not something that you cavalierly just sort of ask a family to do again.”
FLOTUS then went on to discuss how difficult of a job being the First Family is and said that it’s not something she could see putting her family through for a possible 16 years total. “Let me just tell America- this is hard. It’s a hard job, I said it on the campaign trail. It requires a lot of sacrifice. It’s a weighty thing and it’s not something that you even look to one family to take on at that level for that long of a period of time.”
As far as talks of the Democratic Party asking her to run for a position- she says she hasn’t been asked, nor has she been involved in any conversations about possibly running. “I don’t know what they’re talking about- but I’m not talking back,” she laughed.
President Obama also echoed her sentiments in his Rolling Stone interview recently, when he told the magazine that his wife “will never run for office”. “She is as talented a person as I know,” he explained in the interview. “You can see the incredible resonance she has with the American people. But I joke that she’s too sensible to want to be in politics.”
