The nominees for the 74th Golden Globe Awards have been announced and the front-runners of award season are starting to come to light, with Moonlight, Atlanta, and The People v. O.J. Simpson all earning nods just after their successful nights at the Critics Choice Awards.
Moonlight earned the second highest amount of film nominations at 6, coming in just behind La La Land‘s 7 nods. The film will go up against Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Lion and Manchester in the Best Motion Picture-Drama category. FX’s hit series The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story landed the most nominations for a TV series or program with 5, including one for Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television, as well as individual nods to Sterling K. Brown and Courtney B. Vance for their work.
Donald Glover’s new series Atlanta scored 2 nominations for its first season on FX, one for Best Television Series- Musical or Comedy and one for series creator and star Glover.
Other nominations worth noting are ABC’s Black-ish, which earned 3 noms; Issa Rae for her starring role in Insecure; and the Denzel Washington/Viola Davis-led film Fences.
Just like every year, there are also a few surprising snubs. Taraji P. Henson wasn’t nominated for Empire or Hidden Figures (in fact, Empire received no noms at all), Denzel Washington wasn’t recognized for his work directing Fences, Atlanta‘s breakout star LaKeith Stanfield didn’t receive a nom of his own for the series and Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black was nowhere to be found on the nomination list.
The 2017 Golden Globes, hosted by Jimmy Fallon, will air Sunday, January 8 on NBC.
