Black Hollywood Cleans Up at Critics Choice Awards 2016

The 2016 Critics Choice Awards was a great night for Black Hollywood. Tons of stars received recognition for their amazing work this year, including Viola Davis, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Mahershala Ali and more.

The prize-giving ceremony- which was held on Sunday, December 11 and hosted by comedian T.J. Miller- ended up being an evening filled with wins for the black film and TV community. The Best Supporting Actor trophy went to Mahershala Ali for his performance in the critically-acclaimed film Moonlight, and Best Supporting Actress to Viola Davis for her standout performance in Fences. Davis was also honored with the first-ever #SeeHer Award- presented by the Association of National Advertisers (ANA) and A&E- which is meant to spotlight actors who embody the #SeeHer mission,”including pushing boundaries on changing stereotypes and her recognition of the importance of accurately portraying women across the entertainment landscape,” according to the ANA press release.

More big winners included Donald Glover, who won the Best Actor in a Comedy award for his hit show Atlanta; Courtney B. Vance and Sterling K. Brown, both of whom won for their work in The People v. O.J. Simpson; Thandie Newton for her role in Westworld; and Regina King, who took home the title of Best Supporting Actress in a Movie Made for Television or Limited Series.
