The 2016 American Music Awards were filled with memorable moments, including Drake taking home his first AMA (or 4).
The Canadian rapper won his first award of the night in the category of Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album for his 2016 hit Views. The award was presented to him by his former Degrassi co-star Nina Dobrev, and the moment wasn’t lost on him. “Me and Nina were on Degrassi together by the way. We’ve come a long way, you know? Congratulations on all your success,” he said, shouting out his old friend. Drake also ended up walking away with awards for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist, Favorite Song-Soul/R&B (“Work”), and Favorite Song- R&B/Hip-Hop (“Hotline Bling”).
Prince’s Purple Rain won the AMA for Top Soundtrack last night as well, and his sister Tyka Nelson accepted the honor on behalf of her late brother. “Prince defied the odds. A black teen from Minneapolis with a goal to electrify the world. He had the courage to be different with his vision and God-given talent,” Nelson said. “He’s still one of the world’s most respected and loved artists.”
Other big winners from the night include Rihanna, Beyonce, Fetty Wap and more.
