Emmett Till HBO Miniseries Being Produced by Jay Z & Will Smith

emmett_tillJay Z and Will Smith are teaming up to bring one of the most tragic stories in American history-an incident that was so tragic, it sparked the growth of the Civil Rights movement- to HBO.

The duo, who previously brought Annie back to the big screen, have paired up to produce a miniseries that will retell the story of Emmett Till. Till was just 14 years old when he was brutally murdered for flirting with a white woman in Mississippi in 1955. His mother decided to have an open casket funeral so that the nation could see the result of the heinous acts committed against him. Photos of Till in his casket were run in publications across the country and his death became an inspiration for the Civil Rights movement.

According to Deadline, the currently untitled miniseries is now in development and will be headed up by Roc Nation’s Jay-Z, Jay Brown and Ty Ty Smith, Overbrook Entertainment’s Will Smith and James Lassiter.

Also helping produce the series are Casey Affleck and Aaron Kaplan. The Land‘s Steven Caple Jr. will pen the miniseries, which will be based on the book Emmett Till: The Murder That Shocked The World And Propelled The Civil Rights Movement by Devery Anderson.
