Lupita Nyong’o has landed the cover of Vogue for the third time, but there was one major difference between this cover and her previous ones-Nyong’o took Vogue home to Kenya with her and gave them a real taste of Africa.
The Queen of Katwe star brought Vogue to her family compound so that the mag could get a taste of where she comes from and how she became the woman she is today. She also chatted about her upcoming role in Queen of Katwe as the mother of a chess prodigy. “To play a mother of four in Uganda, a formidable mother who has so much working against her, was so compelling to me. It wasn’t something I thought I’d be asked to do,” she said. “The fact that it was based on a true story, an uplifting story out of Africa. . . .Oh, my goodness, all my dreams were coming true in that script.”
Lupita’s rise to stardom means that she now has a wide and diverse fan base. It’s important to the actress to use her fame to be able to bring more attention to “the African voice”. “Being able to use my platform to expand and diversify the African voice,” she said, “I feel very passionate about that. It feels intentional, meaningful.”
That’s why the actress makes sure to chose her roles wisely. “There are certain cards that have been dealt me that I take on,” Lupita says. “I want to create opportunities for other people of color because I’m fortunate enough to have a platform to do that. That is why Eclipsed and even Queen of Katwe are so important, to change the narrative, offer a new lens on African identity.”
Lupita shared some of her photos and video from her Vogue experience on social media, which you can take a look at below!
