Phylicia Rashad Set to Take On Cookie in ‘Empire’

Empire has added another huge special guest to their upcoming third season- this time acting vet and all around phenomenal woman Phylicia Rashad.

The star has signed on to appear in the upcoming season of the soap opera-esque drama and will go toe-to-toe with none other than Cookie herself. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rashad has joined the cast as Diana Dubois, who is described as “a powerhouse from one of New York’s oldest and most prominent African-American families. As the mother of ambitious city councilman Angelo Dubois (season-three guest star Taye Diggs), she has her sights set on higher office for her only son and she’ll stop at nothing to help him get to the top. Diana’s interactions with Cookie (Taraji P. Henson), Lucious (Terrence Howard) and the rest of the Lyon clan will lay bare the stark class divides that can exist, even within the black community.”

It sounds like the Dubois could give the Lyons a run for their money- with the storyline highlighting the differences between old money and new money. It’ll be interesting seeing another family with enough money and power to look down their noses at they Lyons’. We can’t wait to see how this storyline plays out.

Also making guest appearances during Empire’s new season are Mariah Carey, Birdman, Sierra McClain, and French Montana.

Empire returns to FOX for season three on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
