OWN Releases Teaser for New Original Drama ‘Queen Sugar’

Oprah Winfrey has teamed up with Selma director Ava DuVernay to bring OWN audiences an emotional new drama, Queen Sugar.

The new series, based on the Natalie Baszile novel, stars Rutina Wesley (True Blood, Hannibal), Dawn-Lyen Gardner (Heroes, Luke Cage) and Kofi Siriboe (Awkward). According to the network, the show will chronicle the lives and loves of the estranged Bordelon siblings in Saint Josephine, Louisiana: Charley, the savvy wife and manager of an NBA star; Nova, a worldly-wise journalist and activist; and Ralph Angel, a formerly incarcerated young father in search of redemption. After a family tragedy, the Bordelons must navigate the triumphs and struggles of their complicated lives in order to run an ailing sugarcane farm in the Deep South.

Both DuVernay and Winfrey will serve as executive producers in the series, and DuVernay has previously stated that the show will have “an all-women directorial team.” “[It’s] the first television show I’ve created,” DuVernay told ReelBlack. “I jokingly say I’m getting my ‘Shonda’ on but I don’t even know how she juggles all those shows because this show is wearing me out —- in the best way. It’s a lot, but it’s fun.”

The teaser only shows us a few quick glimpses of scenes, but in true DuVernay style, the shots are beautiful and only make us want to tune in to see what goes on in this drama-filled family.
