In the 24 hours since Alton Sterling was shot and killed by police officers in Baton Rouge, LA, many have taken to Twitter to express their anger, sadness and disbelief. As we mourn the loss of yet another black American killed by police, Drake poured his emotions into an open letter about the shooting.
In the letter that he posted to Instagram he reflects on the relationship of african american communities and law enforcement as well as his concern for his own family. “It’s impossible to ignore that the relationship between black and brown communities and law enforcement remains as strained as it was decades ago,” he wrote. “This is real and I’m concerned. Concerned for the safety of my family, my friends, and any human being that could fall victim to this pattern.”
In addition to Drake, many other rappers took to social media to express their emotions about the incident.
Pls officers, look at my son, he’s not here to hurt you, he is not a threat, he loves his life and his parents.#STOP pic.twitter.com/ytxQkHcxfG

My tears are fresh for #AltonSterling. They burn for those bullets the police ended his life with. But this is not over. We will fight. NOW.
