Prepare to travel back to Chicago in 1989 and experience the night President Barack Obama took his future first lady on their first date.
Southside With You, written and directed by Richard Tanne, stars newcomer Parker Sawyers and Tika Sumpter as a young Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson at the very beginning of their relationship, chronicling their first date, which began at the Chicago Arts Institute and ended with an ice cream cone and a kiss.
The film, which boasts John Legends as an executive producer, premiered to mostly positive reviews at Sundance earlier this year. Variety said that “Despite its unassuming modesty of scale, budget and commercial potential, Southside With You stands as something unique, even audacious in American independent movies: a fact-based presidential “prequel” that seeks to present two iconic world figures as convincing and relatable romantic leads.”
The Hollywood Reporter also had great things to say about the romance. “As it stands now, writer-director Richard Tanne’s first feature can simply be enjoyed as perceptive, intelligent, entirely credible imagining of how these two very bright young lawyers broke the ice during a long afternoon and evening in Chicago in 1989.”
