Diddy gives back to the city!
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has announced that come fall, his dream of opening a school will be realized with the opening of the Capital Preparatory Harlem Charter School.
After searching for the right partner, Diddy reached out to Dr. Steve Perry, founder of Hartford, Connecticut’s Capital Prep Magnet School, about six years ago to being discussing working together to open a school. “He was definitely relentless in making this point that he wanted to start a school,” Dr. Perry told WSJ. “He kept it under wraps until today. We wanted to make sure the i’s were dotted and the t’s crossed.”
Naturally, Diddy won’t be involved in the day to day affairs of the school, but Perry said that the mogul has been very involved in the process thus far, helping to select a principal, providing office space, and even lending staff to help out along the way. “Creating this school is a dream come true for me,” Combs said in a statement. “I want to impact the lives of young people in my community and build future leaders. The first step is offering access to a quality education.”
The Capital Preparatory Harlem Charter School is set to open its doors this fall with a total of 160 kids in grades 6 and 7. The plan is for the school to eventually become a 700-seat high school as the kids move up.
The school is now accepting applications for staff and students and as of yesterday over 200 applications had been received.
