Fans of the late R&B singer Aaliyah are calling for MAC to honor the star by releasing a collection in order to “reintroduce Aaliyah’s legacy to the world in a format that it has never been given before.”
Jennifer Risinger, who started the online petition, told BET that she was surprised to receive a reply after she initially reached out to Aaliyah’s brother via Twitter with the idea. “Me and a couple of friends tweeted [Aaliyah’s] brother, Rashad Haughton, and asked if he would be interested in a MAC collection honoring Aaliyah.”
“To our surprise, since the family’s so private, he responded that she loved MAC cosmetics and that he approved and that he would have his licensing team look into it,” Risinger continued.
The Change.org petition makes a clear point about why fans are calling for the late singer to receive her own collection. “From then on, we put a petition together and set up social media accounts.”Aaliyah stands for Mac’s mission of “All ages, All races, All sexes.”,” reads the petition. “She was a risk taker, innovator, edgy, street but sweet, & R and B’s Princess. She continues to influence today’s mainstream artist & people around the world still love and celebrate her life and music every year!”
Some of the products that fans hope to see featured in the collection include “Chelsea Lipstick, Cherish Lipstick, Chestnut Lipliner, espresso eyeshadow, and biscuit eyeshadow”, which were some of Aaliyah’s favorites.
The petition currently has over 12,000 signatures, just a few thousand away from the 15,000 goal. At the time of this article’s publication, MAC has yet to respond to the petition.
