DeAngelo Williams Pays for 53 Mammograms in Honor of Mom Who Died of Breast Cancer
In honor of his late mother who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2014, Pittsburgh Steelers running back DeAngelo Williams announced earlier this month that his nonprofit organization, The DeAngelo Williams Foundation, will cover the cost of 53 mammograms at hospitals located in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Pittsburgh.
The number 53 seems like an odd number to choose, but it is significant to Williams because his mother, Sandra Hill, passed away at the age of 53 after a tough battle with the disease. He also lost his four aunts to the disease.
Williams has been an avid supporter of breast cancer awareness for some time now. In 2009, he led the push to allow NFL players to wear pink cleats throughout October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness month. The NFL star wanted to show his support all season by wearing pink accessories during games, but according to NBC Today he was denied the request by the NFL.
Despite being denied off his efforts on the field, William makes sure he is spreading awareness off the field.
