Music mogul Russell Simmons wants to take the rap game to Broadway.
Revealing details about a new musical titled The Scenario, the show will likely feature a love story, while addressing the sociopolitical challenges during the early days of hip-hop. The musical will feature renditions of the genre’s greatest hits from the 1980s and ’90s.
Although music for the show has yet to be finalized, the hip-hop magnate told The New York Times that there is a good chance that songs and artists from his Def Jam Records label will appear on the musical soundtrack.
The Scenario will mark Simmons’ second theatrical venture. The first debut, an adaptation of his HBO show Def Poetry Jam, recieved accolades at the 2002 Tony Awards.
Simmons hopes to premiere The Scenario on Broadway sometime late 2016.
