Kerry Washington has been chosen to be honored with the Vanguard Award at this year’s GLAAD Media Awards. The Scandal star will be presented with the award at the 26th Annual ceremony in Los Angeles on March 21.
The Vanguard Award is given to media professionals who have made a “significant difference in promoting equality.” GLAAD praised Washington for becoming the first African-American woman to headline a network TV drama since 1974 when she took on the role of Olivia Pope on the LGBT-inclusive show Scandal. The organization also deemed Washington worthy of the award due to her involvement in GLAAD’s annual anti-bullying campaign, Spirit Day and her continuous support of full equality for the LGBT community.
“Throughout her illustrious career, Kerry Washington has consistently brought life to characters that encourage acceptance of LGBT people,” said GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “Her outspoken support for equality, both here at home and abroad, has sent messages of hope and empowerment to fans all over the world, fostering dialogue that builds understanding and helps move hearts and minds.”
Previous Vanguard Award honorees include Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Charlize Theron, Drew Barrymore, Antonio Banderas and Kristin Chenoweth.
