It’s been more than 33 years since Muhammad Ali fought his last match, but at age 73, the big man is still commanding big bucks.
Under Armour announced their multi-year sponsorship with the iconic boxer on Wednesday (Feb. 18), revealing plans to launch an extensive line of Ali branded clothing and products.
With a lifestyle apparel line rolling out next month, a limited edition graphic T-shirt will be available for purchase on Wednesday to launch the new partnership. Ali’s name and image will soon be seen on training apparel, footwear and accessories by the end of the year with the help of Authentic Brands Group (ABG), which bought Ali’s estate and licensing rights in 2013.
“He’s an iconic hero from the past and a true innovator,” said Glenn Silbert, vice president of Global Products at Under Armour. “We wondered what Ali would have been like if he had a brand like ours when he was getting started and how great it could have been. That has been the mentality of our design team throughout this process.”
Companies involved with the new deal are hoping to appeal to the nostalgia of older customers, but also new fans by creating an outlet to introduce the legend fighter to younger generations.
There may be some who weren’t a fan of Ali for his bravado or fighting style, but you would be hard-pressed to find many who don’t respect him for the impact he had on the sport and on this country.
Ali retired in 1981 and has since revealed he is fighting a battle with Parkinson’s disease.
