Back up, Tom Brady — Missy Elliot was the real MVP last night!
With a surprise appearance during Katy Perry’s Super Bowl XLIX half-time show, a slimmed down Elliot may have arguably just launched herself back into the music industry with her performance last night (Feb. 1).
Elliot, who has been on hiatus since the mid-2000s, took fans by surprise when she hit the stage in full force to perform several of her hits. Showing off her 70lb weight-loss, the hip-hop legend sported her trim shape in a black racing uniform as she performed smash hits “Get Ur Freak On” and “Work It” with the help of K.P. for “Lose Control.”
Almost immediately after Elliot took the stage, Twitter ignited with tweets about her performance and Spotify streams showed an overall increase by 676%. Additionally, both “Work It” and “Get Ur Freak On” crept up on the iTunes Top Songs chart, respectively snagging the fourth and sixth spots, as of noon ET on Monday (Feb. 2).
Because of Elliot’s extended break from music, many listeners discovered the rap star for the first time.
All in all, the night brought back the perfect combination of ’90s nostalgia among today’s modern hits.
